This week the key concept is workflows. The workflow refers to the process that is used to create a model. The detailed workflow of a specific model is covered in the ‘making of’ articles that you will see in magazines etc.

There are three general workflows that you need to become familiar with.

  1. Box modelling. Also refered to a poly modelling, this technique uses basic 3D shapes which are modelled.
  2. Subdivision modelling uses a control cage to pull the 3D shape into the desired form. In 3DS Max an FFD modifier is used for this.
  3. Spline modelling which begins with a spline (3D line) and models from that using the ribbon tools.

Particularly with box and spline modelling a template is sometimes used to guide the modelling.

This playlist covers the setup of a template and the modelling of a female head from a spline. The spline is edited out into a plane which is modelled around the head shape.
