This week the key concept is workflows. The workflow refers to the process that is used to create a model. The detailed workflow of a specific model is covered in the ‘making of’ articles that you will see in magazines etc.
There are three general workflows that you need to become familiar with.
- Box modelling. Also refered to a poly modelling, this technique uses basic 3D shapes which are modelled.
- Subdivision modelling uses a control cage to pull the 3D shape into the desired form. In 3DS Max an FFD modifier is used for this.
- Spline modelling which begins with a spline (3D line) and models from that using the ribbon tools.
Particularly with box and spline modelling a template is sometimes used to guide the modelling.
This playlist covers the setup of a template and the modelling of a female head from a spline. The spline is edited out into a plane which is modelled around the head shape.
